Gloucestershire-born Matthew Coleridge will lead a choir of over 200 singers from around the country in a performance of his composition REQUIEM.
The piece debuted in this year’s Classic FM Hall of Fame - one of only three new works to break into the top 100 - with presenter Alexander Armstrong hailing the composer as “a great force for good in the choral world”.
The concert will be the culmination of a ‘Requiem in a Day’ workshop led by Matthew, with singers spending the day rehearsing the music under the composer’s direction, before singing in a deeply moving concert performance. “I think it’s pretty unique for a composer to present their music this way” said Matthew. “For many of the singers, it’ll be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sing in a building such as the Abbey, so after a full-on day of rehearsing we always get an emotionally charged and exhilarating performance”
Performing alongside the choir will be Pedro Silva, who will play the Requiem’s lyrical and soaring cello part. The performance will be accompanied by the abbey’s organist Carleton Etherington.
