The year 2021 is an exceptional year as it marks the 900th anniversary of the consecration of Tewkesbury Abbey together with the 550th of the Battle of Tewkesbury, the most decisive in the Wars of the Roses.
As the build up to what promises to be an extremely exciting and rewarding time for the town a team of dedicated volunteers formed the “2021 Tewkesbury Together” Committee who are working hard to ensure that everybody who lives in, works in, visits and loves Tewkesbury can come together to celebrate its rich and remarkable heritage.
Tewkesbury already has many great annual events to build on to embrace this special anniversary year. Plus new events especially planned for the occasion to create a legacy for the future.
Celebrations will begin on Sun 2nd & Bank holiday Monday 3rd May with “Armour at the Abbey” a family event held in the Abbey and the Abbey Grounds.
Tuesday 4th May is the 550th anniversary date of the Battle which begins with a Procession of Knights on horseback retracing the route of the Lancastrian Army from Gloucester to Tewkesbury.
On the 15th and 16th May is “Tewkesbury’s Big Weekend” with many events held historically in the Town and procession from the Abbey onto the River itself with entertainment going into the evening.
Held in the grounds of Tewkesbury Abbey on the weekend of the 5th and 6th June will be the “Summer Beer Festival” supported by CAMRA. This is a family occasion with plenty of food and drink to enjoy plus music and entertainment.
Tewkesbury’s annual world famous “Medieval Festival” and Battle re-enactment will be held on the weekend of 10th and 11th July and will include many extra events to celebrate this famous battle as always attracting thousands of visitors.
Focus then moves back to the Abbey’s celebrations with its “Son et Lumiere” a spectacular week long light show leading up to a the 900th anniversary on 23rd October followed with a Consecration Service and family fun day celebration on the 24th October.
There are of course many other family events that Tewkesbury has throughout the year from Concerts at the Abbey, Watson Hall and the Roses Theatre to Classic Car and Steam Rallies, Fun Fair, Markets, Bonfire Fireworks, ending with Christmas celebrations.
